The Idaho 5 Goldback represents the virtue Clementia, a symbol of mercy, gentleness, and responsible stewardship. The artwork portrays a quiet moment of renewal in the Wallace Mountains of northern Idaho following the devastating Great Fire of 1910, one of the most destructive wildfires in American history.
At the center of the design, Clementia kneels on charred ground, planting young saplings where a forest once stood. Her actions symbolize restoration, patience, and the responsibility to care for the land after destruction. The image reflects Idaho’s enduring commitment to rebuilding and protecting its natural landscapes.
Beside her stands a small fawn, representing innocence, hope, and the return of life to the forest after devastation. Nearby rests an empty patera, a traditional symbol associated with mercy and compassion, reinforcing the theme of renewal and care.
