Idaho 5 Goldback Design Meaning: Mercy, Renewal, and the Great Fire of 1910
Virtue: Clementia (Mercy)
Enduring Principle: “Beauty for ashes.” — Isaiah 61:3
The Idaho 5 Goldback represents the virtue Clementia, a symbol of mercy, gentleness, and responsible stewardship. The artwork portrays a quiet moment of renewal in the Wallace Mountains of northern Idaho following the devastating Great Fire of 1910, one of the most destructive wildfires in American history.
At the center of the design, Clementia kneels on charred ground, planting young saplings where a forest once stood. Her actions symbolize restoration, patience, and the responsibility to care for the land after destruction. The image reflects Idaho’s enduring commitment to rebuilding and protecting its natural landscapes.
Beside her stands a small fawn, representing innocence, hope, and the return of life to the forest after devastation. Nearby rests an empty patera, a traditional symbol associated with mercy and compassion, reinforcing the theme of renewal and care.
The scene references the historic Great Fire of 1910—often called the “Big Burn.” The wildfire consumed millions of acres across northern Idaho, Montana, and Washington, destroying entire towns and reshaping the region’s landscape. Communities such as Wallace, Avery, and others were heavily impacted, and some settlements were never rebuilt.
For Idaho, the Big Burn became both a tragedy and a turning point. The disaster helped transform wildfire management and conservation policy in the United States, leading to stronger forest protection efforts and elevating the role of firefighters and the U.S. Forest Service in safeguarding public lands.
The Idaho 5 Goldback design reflects how the state responded in the aftermath of that devastation: replanting forests, rebuilding communities, and learning to steward the land more wisely.
Through the virtue Clementia, the artwork honors Idaho’s resilience, compassion, and commitment to renewal.
Inscribed along the bottom of the denomination is the enduring principle:
“Beauty for ashes.” — Isaiah 61:3

"Amazing service and hospitality from the staff at IDC! Jason was so attentive and patient in our search for our ideal watches. He took us through several options, had us try every watch we were interested in, took our information and continued searching for options. A few hours later, we had our watches on hold and ready for pick up! He located a watch that I LOVE, and a unique piece for my husband. We are grateful to have found our new Jeweler for many pieces to come!"
