History of the American Silver Eagle

The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. The program was authorized under the Liberty Coin Act of 1985.

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the U.S. half dollar in 1916.

From 1986 through the first part of 2021, Silver Eagles featured John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse design.

In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced a new reverse designed by Emily Damstra, showing an eagle preparing to land while carrying an oak branch.

American Silver Eagles are collected by year, mint, strike type, certified grade, special designation, and recognized varieties.

American Silver Eagles are legal-tender coins with a $1 face value. Their silver content and collectible market value are separate from that denomination.

2021 Type 1 vs. Type 2 Silver Eagles

The 2021 American Silver Eagle is especially important because two reverse designs were issued during the same calendar year.

2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle

Features John Mercanti's original heraldic eagle reverse, used on American Silver Eagles from 1986 through early 2021.

2021 Type 2 Silver Eagle

Features Emily Damstra's new landing eagle reverse, introduced in 2021 and used on subsequent issues.

Collectors may pursue both 2021 types in matching grades, certification holders, or special-release sets.

The redesign also introduced updated anti-counterfeiting features, including a reeded-edge variation.

Types of American Silver Eagles

American Silver Eagles have been issued in several formats. These are different manufacturing and collecting categories, not simply different grades.

Bullion Silver Eagles

Standard investment-oriented coins sold through the Mint's authorized purchaser distribution network. Many are subsequently submitted for third-party grading.

Proof Silver Eagles

Specially manufactured collector coins with reflective fields and contrasting design elements. They are often identified by PR or PF grades.

Burnished Silver Eagles

Collector issues with a distinctive uncirculated finish. These are different from ordinary bullion-strike coins.

Reverse Proof Silver Eagles

Collector coins featuring a reverse Proof finish, generally with frosted fields and reflective design elements.

Important: A coin graded MS-70 is not automatically a special collector issue. The assigned grade and the coin's manufacturing finish are separate attributes.

Important American Silver Eagle Dates & Issues

Many American Silver Eagles are readily available, but certain dates, mintmarks, finishes, and certified varieties attract particular interest.

1986 First-Year Silver Eagle

The inaugural year is popular with collectors building first-year sets or complete date runs.

1995-W Proof Silver Eagle

A major key issue in the Proof series, originally available through a special gold-and-silver anniversary set.

2008-W Reverse of 2007

A recognized burnished Silver Eagle variety distinguished by reverse design details associated with the earlier hub.

2011 25th Anniversary Set

A five-coin collector set featuring different Silver Eagle finishes and minting formats.

2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof

A highly collected special issue known for its limited production and distinctive finish.

2021 Type 1 & Type 2

The transition year provides an opportunity to collect both original and redesigned reverse types.

MS69 vs. MS70 Silver Eagles

Two of the most common certified grades for American Silver Eagles are MS-69 and MS-70.

Grade General Meaning Collector Consideration
MS-69 Mint State with extremely minor imperfections under the service's standards. Often offers an attractive certified example without the premium sometimes associated with MS-70.
MS-70 The highest Mint State numerical grade. Can command additional premiums depending on date, population, label, and demand.
PF/PR-69 Proof coin assigned grade 69. Relevant to Proof Silver Eagles rather than ordinary bullion strikes.
PF/PR-70 The highest numerical grade for a Proof coin. Premiums vary substantially between issues.
SP-70 Highest numerical grade for an eligible specimen-strike coin. Used by certain grading services for applicable special finishes.

For common-date bullion issues, the price difference between MS-69 and MS-70 may be modest or significant, depending on the exact coin and market conditions.

Collectors should not assume every MS-70 Silver Eagle is scarce simply because it received the highest grade.

PCGS, NGC, ICG & ANACS Silver Eagles

Professional grading companies examine eligible coins, assess their condition, and encapsulate them in protective holders.

PCGS Silver Eagles

PCGS-certified examples appeal to collectors seeking documented grades, certification verification, and population information.

NGC Silver Eagles

NGC certifies bullion, Proof, and other eligible Silver Eagle issues, including special labels and designations.

ICG Silver Eagles

ICG grades American Silver Eagles, including eligible coins participating in IDC Verified.

ANACS Silver Eagles

ANACS provides third-party authentication and grading for American Silver Eagles.

When purchasing a certified Silver Eagle, review the grading service, numerical grade, certification number, and available images.

First Strike, Early Releases & Special Labels

Certified Silver Eagles may carry labels such as First Strike, Early Releases, First Day of Issue, anniversary designations, or signatures.

These labels can have specific submission, documentation, or release requirements established by the grading service.

A special label does not automatically indicate a different coin design, higher numerical grade, or lower mintage.

Some collectors pursue label sets or signed holders, while others prioritize the coin's condition and metal value.

Buying tip: Compare the actual coin, certified grade, and relevant market sales before paying a premium for a particular label.

Mintmarks & Striking Locations

American Silver Eagles may be associated with West Point, San Francisco, or Philadelphia production facilities, depending on the issue.

Collector versions may carry visible mintmarks such as W, S, or P. Standard bullion Silver Eagles generally do not display a mintmark.

On certain certified bullion coins, a parenthesized mint designation, such as (S) or (P), can indicate an attributed striking location based on qualifying documentation.

This should not be confused with a mintmark physically appearing on the coin.

IDC Verified American Silver Eagles

IDC Verified is an authentication and preservation program associated with IDC Coin & Bullion, part of International Diamond Center.

Eligible participating coins combine IDC's numismatic review with independent third-party authentication and grading through Independent Coin Graders (ICG).

The program provides distinctive identification for participating coins, while the independent grading company's assigned grade remains separate.

Not every ICG-certified American Silver Eagle is necessarily IDC Verified.

What Determines the Value of a Certified Silver Eagle?

American Silver Eagle values reflect a combination of precious metal content and collector demand.

Silver Spot Price

Each standard Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce of fine silver, providing a metal-value reference.

Date & Mintage

Some dates, finishes, and special issues have lower production totals than others.

Certified Grade

MS-70 and PF-70 coins may carry premiums depending on their issue and market demand.

Special Varieties

Recognized errors, reverse varieties, anniversary releases, and special finishes can attract additional interest.

Certification can make condition comparisons easier, but it does not guarantee appreciation.

Precious metal prices and numismatic premiums can change independently.
