A new series of silver and gold coins available from the Perth Mint features the so-called Bird of Paradise, which is better known to many in Australia as Victoria’s riflebird. The species is native to New Guinea and is found in the northeast region of Queensland. Available in 1 Troy oz, these new coins are an exciting option for those buying silver.

The so-called Bird of Paradise is better known as Victoria’s riflebird. With beautiful plumage worn by indigenous people of the Yidinji tribe, the bird is known to them as the “duwuduwu.” The bird was first spotted by outside Europeans in 1848 and named for the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom at the time, Queen Victoria I.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Silver Bird of Paradise Coin, you’ll find the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria I for the title. This is the fourth-generation design from Ian Rank-Broadley of the Royal Mint and was created in 1998.
The reverse side of the Australian Silver Bird of Paradise Coins depicts Victoria’s riflebird as it takes off in flight from a branch. The engravings on this side of the coin include the name of the series and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
Perth Mint is the production facility of these new silver coins. The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the third and final Royal Mint facility. Today, it remains as the only open facility from that system and operates independently of the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.
