The Fijian Dollar has been the currency of Fiji since 1969, when it replaced the pre-decimal Fijian Pound. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively FJ$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies.
Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. Some of these are in the half gram of platinum mini-coin format.
This mini coin celebrates the Platinum Jubilee (70th anniversary) of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
On the throne since 6 February 1952, at the date when the coin was issued Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in history, the oldest living and longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state.
Queen Elizabeth II was also the last monarch of Fiji, from 1952 until the country became a republic in 1987.
