The Idaho 1/4 Goldback features the virtue Justitia (Justice), a timeless symbol of fairness, balance, and moral authority. At the center of the design she stands with raised scales, representing the careful weighing of truth, and a lowered sword, symbolizing restrained power guided by wisdom rather than force. A blindfold covers her eyes, reinforcing the principle that justice must remain impartial and free from bias.
This intricate design also contains several symbolic elements drawn from Idaho’s history and natural heritage. On Justitia’s belt appear the elk and cornucopia from the Idaho state seal, representing strength, prosperity, and responsible stewardship of the land.
Nature is further woven into the artwork. A syringa blossom—Idaho’s state flower—is braided into her hair, while a monarch butterfly, the state insect, floats nearby. Together they represent renewal, balance, and the natural order that underlies both society and the environment.
