Idaho 10 Goldback Design Meaning: Perseverance and the Legacy of Silver City

Virtue: Perseverantia (Perseverance)
Enduring Principle: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial.” — James 1:12

The Idaho 10 Goldback represents the virtue Perseverantia, symbolizing determination, endurance, and the strength to continue despite hardship. The design draws inspiration from the history of Silver City, one of Idaho’s most important early mining communities located in the rugged Owyhee Mountains.

The artwork captures a moment during the silver rush of the early 1860s, when rich ore discoveries brought thousands of prospectors and miners to this remote and unforgiving region. At the center of the scene, a miner pauses beside a cart filled with freshly mined silver ore. Her calm but resolute expression reflects the demanding reality of mining life, where success often required long hours of physical labor, risk, and unwavering persistence.

Silver City was founded in 1863 and quickly grew into one of the most productive mining centers in the Pacific Northwest. At its height, the town supported thousands of residents and generated millions of dollars in silver, lead, and gold, helping fuel Idaho’s early economy.

In the background stands the historic Idaho Hotel, built the same year the town was established. The hotel became a central gathering place for miners, merchants, and travelers moving through the region. Along with other structures such as the Masonic Lodge, it represents how perseverance and cooperation transformed a remote mining camp into a thriving frontier town.

Beyond its silver mining heritage, the design also highlights why Idaho is known as the “Gem State.” Idaho is one of the few places in the world where star garnets occur naturally, and the stone was later designated as the official state gemstone. The state has also produced a wide range of other gemstones, including sapphire, opal, jasper, aquamarine, topaz, and quartz, many of which were discovered alongside valuable metal deposits. These gemstones are subtly incorporated into the artwork.

Although silver production eventually declined and the town was largely abandoned, Silver City remains preserved today as one of the most intact historic mining towns in the American West.

The Idaho 10 Goldback design tells a story of persistence and hard-earned success. The cart of silver ore symbolizes wealth that could only be gained through steady effort—one load at a time. Through the virtue Perseverantia, the artwork honors the miners and settlers whose determination helped shape Idaho’s history and identity.

Inscribed along the bottom of the denomination is the enduring message:

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial.” — James 1:12

Customer Reviews

"Amazing service and hospitality from the staff at IDC! Jason was so attentive and patient in our search for our ideal watches. He took us through several options, had us try every watch we were interested in, took our information and continued searching for options. A few hours later, we had our watches on hold and ready for pick up! He located a watch that I LOVE, and a unique piece for my husband. We are grateful to have found our new Jeweler for many pieces to come!"
