The Florida Half Goldback embodies the virtue “Spes” (Hope) through the figure of a Spanish conquistador kneeling before the mythical Fountain of Youth, symbolizing humanity’s enduring pursuit of renewal and possibility. Set within a lush tropical landscape, the scene intertwines history and myth, featuring the fleur-de-lis emblem of exploration and the year 1513 etched in stone, commemorating Juan Ponce de León’s voyage inspired by Timucua legends. Surrounding elements, such as the resilient mockingbird, the transformative Zebra Longwing butterfly, and the Florida Cracker horse, reflect perseverance and endurance. A conch shell at the water’s edge honors Florida’s indigenous Timucua culture, while the artwork pays tribute to explorers’ ambitions and Florida’s legacy as the site of St. Augustine, the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States.
