The American Gold Buffalo Coin’s introduction in 2006 was a monumental occasion for the United States Mint. Since its founding in 1792, the purest gold coin ever released by the US Mint was 22-karat gold, or .9167 content. The American Gold Buffalo coins were the first-ever 24-karat, .9999 pure gold, coins in American history.

American Gold Buffalo Coins feature the same designs from the Buffalo Nickel, the circulation five-cent piece from the US Mint that featured designs by James Earle Fraser. The Proof Gold Buffalo debuted in 2006 alongside the bullion version of the coin and has the highest mintage in the series at 246,267 coins in total. The lowest mintage in the series came in 2015 when just 16,591 coins were released.
On the obverse side of American Gold Buffalo 1 oz coins is the portrait of a Native American figure in right-profile relief. He has woven hair and a feather within it. The date mark is featured below his bust and the word “Liberty” is inscribed just off the nose of the figure.
The reverse face of 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins includes the design of an American bison. The buffalo depicted here is in left-profile relief and stands on a mound of dirt. The bison depicted here is inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison from the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
