The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all speak of the moment when Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, betrays him to the Romans. With the Roman authorities and Jewish leaders seeking to silence Jesus and his teachings to keep Jerusalem peaceful, the authorities needed to know where to locate the Messiah and how to identify him quickly.
While Jesus’ other disciples would not be swayed to betray him, Judas was easily convinced with gold and silver. The Romans paid Judas to reveal to them not only the location of Jesus as he sought to avoid his enemies, but also identified him by kissing his hand and then leaning in to kiss him on the cheek.
The obverse of the 2020 2 oz Judas Kiss Biblical Series Silver Coin includes an iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured here in the third-generation portrait from the Royal Ming of England. Created in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf, this bust is considered one of the more ornate images of the Queen to ever feature on British or Commonwealth coinage. It was in use from 1985 to 1997.
