Symbolism of the God Thoth

Thoth is one of the most prominent deities of the ancient Egyptian pantheon, serving as the god of wisdom, writing, magic, science, and the moon. This bullion round cleverly integrates his two primary sacred animal manifestations—the Ibis and the Baboon—to convey his vast cosmic responsibilities.

Obverse Design: The Scribe of the Gods

The obverse depicts Thoth in his classic anthropomorphic form with the head of an Ibis.

•    The Scribe's Tools: He holds a stylus in one hand and a scribal palette in the other, referencing his role as the inventor of language, hieroglyphs, and alphabets.

•    The Seat of Judgment: Thoth sits upon a throne adorned with a carved scale. In the underworld (Duat), Thoth stands alongside Anubis during the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. While Anubis operates the scales, Thoth acts as an impartial judge, meticulously recording the final verdict of whether a soul is worthy to pass into paradise.

•    The Moon & Reed Plants: A crescent moon sits in the background, symbolizing his duty as a regulator of time and cycles. Below his feet sit papyrus reeds, the raw material used for the sacred texts he authorized.

Reverse Design: The Baboon and the Solar Bark

The reverse highlights Thoth's secondary manifestation: the Hamadryas Baboon.

•    The Baboon of Equivalence: Ancient Egyptians noticed that baboons would chatter loudly at dawn, which they interpreted as a greeting to the rising sun. Because Thoth is a lunar deity who balances the solar light of Ra, the baboon represents the equilibrium between day and night, wisdom, and active focus.

•    The Solar Bark & Great Pyramid: The baboon sits inside a traditional Egyptian reed boat, navigating past a towering pyramid decorated with dense hieroglyphic panels. Thoth frequently traveled on the sun god Ra's heavenly boat to defend it from cosmic chaos using his potent magical spells.

•    The Lunar Disk: Perched upon the baboon's head is a heavy lunar disk, reaffirming his ownership over night-time skies and celestial mathematics.
