The "The Watergate Bug" refers to the Watergate scandal, a massive 1970s political crisis that began with an illegal, state-sponsored espionage break-in. It ultimately led to the historic resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon.

The core events unfolded across several interconnected phases:

  1.  The Break-in and "The Bug"
  2. The Target: Early in the morning of June 17, 1972, five men were arrested inside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C..
  3. The Mission: The men were caught wiretapping office phones, fixing faulty electronic eavesdropping "bugs" planted during a prior break-in, and photographing top-secret campaign documents.
  4. The Culprits: The burglars were directly hired and funded by the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP, often mockingly called CREEP), a fundraising organization tied straight to Nixon's administration.

 The Cover-Up and Sabotage

  1. Systemic Espionage: Congressional investigations soon revealed that the wiretapping wasn't an isolated incident. The Nixon White House had actively ran a covert operations group (nicknamed "The Plumbers") to aggressively wiretap journalists, political opponents, and suspected administration whistleblowers.
  2. Obstruction of Justice: Instead of cooperating with law enforcement, President Nixon and his top aides directed a massive cover-up. They paid "hush money" to the burglars, destroyed crucial evidence, and improperly ordered the FBI to halt its investigation under the false guise of national security.

 The Secret Tapes and Downfall

  1. The Smoking Gun: The scandal blew wide open when a Senate committee discovered that Nixon had secretly installed a voice-activated recording system throughout the Oval Office.
  2. The Legal Battle: Nixon fought for over a year to hide these recordings, claiming "executive privilege". The legal battle went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously in United States v. Nixon that he must turn over the audio files.
  3. The Resignation: Audio tapes from June 23, 1972 (the famous "Smoking Gun" tape) conclusively proved that Nixon personally ordered the cover-up just days after the break-in. Facing certain impeachment and removal from office, Nixon announced his resignation on August 8, 1974

Customer Reviews

"Amazing service and hospitality from the staff at IDC! Jason was so attentive and patient in our search for our ideal watches. He took us through several options, had us try every watch we were interested in, took our information and continued searching for options. A few hours later, we had our watches on hold and ready for pick up! He located a watch that I LOVE, and a unique piece for my husband. We are grateful to have found our new Jeweler for many pieces to come!"
