Vintage China Cash Coins From the Charles Tanant Collection
China was a very poor country at the Turn of the Century when this coin was struck. At that time, citizens weren’t in a position that enabled them to collect their nation’s coins, a fact that resulted in many of these coins being worn in circulation or melted down to create new issues. But thankfully for today’s collectors there was Charles Tanant.
A native of France, Charles Tanant, was a customs official in the China Maritime Service in the late 19th century and early 20th century. As he moved from post to post during his career, he was able to build a Chinese coin collection that was second to none. Whether he obtained the pieces trough his excursions to local markets or as gifts from his fellow colleagues, Tanant amassed one of the world’s largest and finest collection of Chinese coins.
Over the course of 36 years, Tanant’s collection steadily grew one piece at a time, and was estimated to contain more than 5,000 early vintage Chinese coins, including finest-known and only-known examples. After retiring in 1923, Tanant returned home from the Far East. His collection came with him and remained in the south of France for most of the next century.
Here we have a limited number of centuries-old bronze “cash” coins cast between 1851 and 1861 during the Qing Dynasty. These iconic coins are known for the square hole in their center, used to string certain numbers together for easier counting. Each comes sonically certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as having come from the Tanant Collection and will be sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with a special Tanant Collection pedigreed label
