2018 is the 5th year of the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Coin Series, a collection of coins that began in 2014 and has gained popularity from many collectors. This year, retired 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti, combined with the efforts of the Perth Mint, are proud to introduce the 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin.
Coin Highlights:
2018 brings a brand new, unique design by engraver genius, John Mercanti. Mercanti’s signature is also featured on the coin; he agreed to sign a limited amount of labels for the NGC for this coin series. Mercanti has designed coins in the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Series for five years now, and he is the first American coin designer to be featured in a catalog from the Perth Mint.
The 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin is graded with a Mint State-70 (MS70) from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). When a coin receives an MS70 grading, the coin itself retains its original mint luster with no visible flaws. Even when magnified, MS70 graded coins show no imperfections.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin, Queen Elizabeth II is turned to show her profile. The obverse also features engravings of her name, the face value of the coin, and the nation of issue. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. His IRB initials are featured under Queen Elizabeth II’s bust.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin shows a family of eagles, the fifth design that Mercanti has created for this series. On the 2018 coin, the female eagle is seen nesting and caring for her newborn eaglet, while the father eagle flies toward them in the sky above. It’s a majestic scene to represent and honor Australia’s largest bird of prey.
