The American Gold Eagle coin is the nation’s official gold bullion offering and is available annually in both investment-grade and proof options. The proof coins come in the same four weights available in the bullion versions but were introduced over the course of the first three years of coin availability. The reverse of the Gold Eagle coins includes the American bald eagle family design.
Proof American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 with just a 1 oz gold option struck at the West Point Mint and bearing a “W” mint mark on the coin’s reverse. When it comes to the fractional-ounce coins in the series, the ½ oz coin debuted in 1987 followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
