Coin Highlights:
In Book I of the Faerie Queene, we meet both Una and Redcrosse. Una’s parents live in a castle and are under siege by a dangerous dragon. Una secures a suit of armor and then goes to the Faerie Queene for help. She would prefer a veteran knight to rescue her parents, but a young, inexperienced peasant volunteers instead. Una ultimately determines that if the armor she has brought fits the peasant, then she will let him attempt the rescue. It does, and soon the peasant, named Redcrosse by the queen, sets off with Una to prove his strength and valor.
The obverse of 2023 St. Helena Silver Faerie Queene Una and Redcrosse Coins contains a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Confirming the coin as legal tender, this portrait shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. It debuted in 2015 and is credited to Jody Clark. Inscriptions along the border read Elizabeth II, D G REG F D, St. Helena, 2023 1 Pound.
On the reverse of 2023 1 oz St. Helena Silver Una and Redcrosse Coin, there is a design inspired by The Faerie Queene. On the left, we see Una, who beseeches the Redcrosse knight to rescue her parents from a dangerous dragon. Redcrosse appears in a full suit of armor as he sits upon his horse with a shield and spear. In the distance, we see the dragon looming above the castle in an ominous fashion. Along the edge, there is an inscription reading The Faerie Queene.
