Proof American Gold Eagles from the United States Mint rolled out at a different pace than their bullion counterparts. Though both versions of the coin were authorized with the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 and debuted together in 1986, the proof series featured only a 1 oz gold coin at first. Over the 1987 and 1988 release years, fractional weights were introduced, culminating in the popular 1/10 oz proof coin as the smallest option.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint introduced its fractional-weight Proof Gold Eagles in 1987 and 1988. First came the 1/2 oz gold coin in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and these 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles in 1988. The only year since that time in which the US Mint has not produced Proof Gold Eagles was 2009.
When buying 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins, there are two important changes to be aware of through the history of this series. From 1988 until 1991, 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles had date marks listed in Roman numerals. From 1992 onward, the date marks were struck in Arabic numerals.
Additionally, the mint marks on proof coins vary by year as well for the fractional weights. The 1 oz coin has been produced at the West Point Mint since 1986. However, 1/10 oz Gold Eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a “P” mint mark from 1988 to 1993. From 1994 onward, the West Point Mint issued the coins with a “W” mint mark.
On the obverse of 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagles, you’ll find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ vision of Lady Liberty from the $20 Gold Double Eagle. The reverse side features an exclusive design of a family of bald eagles from Miley Busiek.
