This 1 oz round of .999 fine silver is a piece of history salvaged from the wreckage of the Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sank off the coast of Florida in 1622. Minted in 1991 by SilverTowne, this round is a tribute to the treasure and artifacts that were recovered from the Atocha by Mel Fisher and his team on July 20, 1985. This commemorative medal was struck utilizing genuine sea-salvaged silver from the famous Atocha shipwreck of 1622.
A great opportunity to own Silver medallions that were struck from Silver that was recovered from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha by Mel Fisher. The Atocha was the most famous of a fleet of Spanish ships that sank in 1622 off the Florida Keys while carrying copper, Silver, Gold, tobacco, gems, jewels, jewelry and indigo from Spanish ports at Cartagena, Colombia, Porto Bello in New Granada and Havana bound for Spain. The ship was named for the parish of Atocha in Madrid.
On September 6, 1622, the Atocha was driven by a severe hurricane onto the coral reefs near the Dry Tortugas, about 35 miles west of Key West, Florida. With her hull badly damaged, the vessel quickly sank, drowning everyone on board except for three sailors and two slaves.
American treasure hunter Mel Fisher and a team of subcontractors, funded by investors and others in a joint venture, searched the sea bed for the Atocha for 16.5 years. The Atocha wreck and its mother lode of Silver, Gold and emeralds was finally discovered on July 20, 1985.

"Amazing service and hospitality from the staff at IDC! Jason was so attentive and patient in our search for our ideal watches. He took us through several options, had us try every watch we were interested in, took our information and continued searching for options. A few hours later, we had our watches on hold and ready for pick up! He located a watch that I LOVE, and a unique piece for my husband. We are grateful to have found our new Jeweler for many pieces to come!"
