Picture this: July 2, 1956, a dense fog near Nantucket, and an unfortunate collision between the Italian pride of the fleet and the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm. Tragedy struck, with forty-six lives tragically lost. But amidst the aftermath, a diver named Peter Gimbel fearlessly dove into the depths, capturing haunting images of the sunken ship.
Fast forward to 1981, and Peter Gimbel, together with his wife Elga Anderson, embarked on The Doria Project. Their mission? To recover artifacts from the S.S. Andrea Doria, including the first-class safe operated by Credito Italiano, a major Italian bank. The culmination of their efforts came on August 25, 1985, when they finally managed to haul the safe to the surface.
Immersed in opaque black water for decades, the safe held a remarkable surprise—a trove of currency. Amongst these hidden treasures lies the bill that you now proudly hold in your possession.
To ensure its preservation, this numbered artifact has been meticulously cared for by Dr. Peter Sparks, the esteemed Director of Preservation at the Library of Congress. Furthermore, the authenticity and origin of this remarkable bank note have been meticulously examined and certified by Mr. Paul Zerler, a distinguished appraiser and fine arts consultant.
In addition, this 1935E Silver Certificate has been certified a Genuine “D” Grade by PCGS Currency.
As a genuine maritime artifact recovered from the S.S. Andrea Doria, this PCGS-certified bank note holds significant historical value. Its "D" grade designation by PCGS Currency attests to its authenticity and quality, adding an additional layer of prestige to this captivating piece.
