The United States Mint introduced the first of the 1/2 oz First Spouse Gold Coins in 2007, with each design of a First Spouse appearing in the order in which they appeared in the nation’s history. The series started in 2007 with the wives of the first four men to hold the office of President of the United States of America: Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and Dolley Madison. Presidents without a spouse while serving in office are represented by an obverse portrait of Liberty, as was the case for Thomas Jefferson.

On the obverse of all 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Gold Coins is an effigy of one of the many spouses to have held the title while their partner served as President of the United States of America. There are four coin designs released each year, with the 2009 and 2016 collections featuring five coins and three coins, respectively.
The reverse face of 1/2 oz First Spouse Gold Coins includes a unique design found only in the individual releases. The reverse field is used to honor the accomplishments of the various First Spouses while serving alongside their partner in the White House.
