The platypus is one of the most unique animal species from a continent on planet Earth that is already known for its one-of-a-kind diversity. A semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal, the platypus is the last living member of its family and genus, with all other related species extinct. The platypus has been a popular figure on Perth Mint coinage since its introduction on platinum coins.

The platypus is one of the most recognizable creatures from the Australian continent and an iconic symbol of the nation. The platypus is also important within the history of the Aboriginal Australians as it was once a primary food source for tribes, though the animal is now a protected species that is considered near-threatened.
On the obverse of 2021 Australian Silver Platypus Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile effigy of Her Majesty shows the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown in a design in which she is featured at the age of 89. This effigy was created in 2015 for the Royal Mint by Jody Clark and was the fifth-generation British design for coinage. This is the sixth-generation design for Perth Mint coins.
The reverse side of the 2021 1.5 oz Silver Platypus Coin comes with an image of a platypus swimming under the water. The image of the platypus shows the semiaquatic mammal swimming beneath a lilypad.
Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating mint. Founded in 1899, the mint has been an entity of the government of Western Australia since the 1970s and its coinage has legal tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
